  1. It's got everything you could ask for in a story. Danger. Forbidden passion. Compelling characters. Locales both familiar and exotic. And vampires! That's right, vampires. If you haven't heard of the Twilight Saga by now, get ready - this pop culture sensation is poised to reach stellar new heights in 2009! In 2008, the movie Twilight introduced us to the intense relationship between the all-too-human Bella Swan and her devastatingly gorgeous vampire beau Edward Cullen. The heady mix of pulse-pounding action and thrilling romance was not only a top-10 box office smash - it was just the beginning. Now, with the sequel New Moon set to debut in theaters November 20th, the saga comes to Barbie® Collector! Edward and Bella, Pink Label™ creations based on their counterparts in the movies (Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart), bring to life a pivotal scene from New Moon, with outfits inspired by the actual movie costumes. "As you can imagine, I was thrilled to find out that I would design the dolls," says Sharon Zuckerman, who designed the dolls. "It was an unforgettable experience and I hope Twilight fans are just as excited about the dolls as I am!" Don't wait until the movie drops to get your Edward and Bella dolls - they're available right now, right here!
  2. Arlington, VA welcomes the 2015 National Barbie® Doll Collectors Convention! From the “Great White Way” Salesroom to the Costume Designer Fashion Show, the “Curtains Up” Competition Room to “Sardi’s After Hours,” this year’s Convention promises to be an absolute sensation. To find out more, we interviewed 2015 Convention Chair Julie Bronski, who shared advice, insight, and her own personal excitement about the event. This year's theme is A Star is Barbie™, and it's going to be a smash hit! Where did the Broadway-inspired theme idea come from? Yes, it will be a smash hit! It was actually a collaborative idea between myself and two other collectors. Barbie® has been in movies, on the runway, on tour, so it was time she went to Broadway. What the most important piece of advice you could give to the Barbie fan attending Convention for the very first time? Be prepared to live your dream. You will find just about anything you want, need, or desire at Convention. It is just amazing. Be prepared to walk a lot, so make sure you have comfortable shoes. How will you keep things fresh for the experienced Convention attendees? We have some great surprises lined up and they are AMAZING! Every Convention works to do things to theme, and I believe the advisors and myself have put together some things that everyone will want. You've been a life-long Barbie® lover, but organizing doll shows and conventions takes it to a whole new level. What inspires you to take on these kinds of commitments? Collecting Barbie® is something I truly enjoy, and if I could find a way to make it a full-time job, I would. It is truly the love of the hobby and making sure that collecting is a continuing tradition for the current generation to embrace. You're not just the Convention Chair, you're also a Barbie fan and doll collector. Speaking as a Barbie fan, what are you personally the most excited for at this year's Convention? This year I am most excited for... well so many things. Probably the artwork that Robert Best designed for us. He took our concepts and enhanced them to make them really something special this year. ~*~*~*~*~ What are you most excited for at Convention this year? Let us know in the comments!
  3. A "diamond jubilee" marks the occasion of a 60th anniversary. Anything with that kind of lasting influence deserves to be celebrated! So allow us to humbly present the Barbie® 60th Anniversary Doll, which embodies all the class and elegance this moment in time deserves. Time has a way of flying faster as it goes – it barely seems like the blink of an eye since the 50th! But here we are for the 60th, and Barbie® looks as stunning as she did back in 1959, when the world caught its collective breath as the Original Teenage Fashion Model made her debut at the New York Toy Fair. To commemorate her diamond anniversary, we've blended nostalgic details and modern style in an homage to Barbie® doll's fashion heritage. She wears a cascading ball gown twinkling with silvery sparkles. Black, open-toed mules and golden hoop earrings complete the ensemble. Reminiscent of the original Barbie® doll, Barbie® 60th Anniversary Doll’s look features iconic details, like her signature ponytail with a dramatic twist, red lip, and side-eye glance. The doll comes in both Caucasian and African-American versions, and arrives in special 60th anniversary packaging featuring black and white stripes and highlighted with accents of Barbie® doll’s signature pink. The doll stand and Certificate of Authenticity are also included, along with a special wrist tag reminiscent of the original tags from way back when. A diamond jubilee only comes around once in a lifetime. It's an event you can't afford to miss, and when there's a doll like this to honor the historic milestone, you can't let the opportunity pass you by. Early access to the Barbie® 60th Anniversary Doll is now open for Platinum and Gold Status members. Get her for your collection today – she’s the kind of keepsake you'll want to own for generations to come! Production dolls may vary from the images shown.

  5. By Allen Voivod It’s been one of the most popular requests from collectors of Barbie® Fashion Model Collection dolls, and it’s finally come true. The Silkstone® dolls that wear haute couture for The Barbie™ Collection are now posable! We interviewed Design Director Robert Best To learn more about this exciting change, and what it means for the future of the collection. How do you feel about the poseability change? I honestly couldn’t be more excited about the new posable Silkstone dolls! What drove the decision to make the BFMC dolls posable? I have always wanted to evolve this collection and add the appropriate innovation when it felt right. I certainly did not want to compromise the quality as well as the look of the collection with needless bells and whistles, but in this case I think the team nailed it. Collectors have also been asking for posable Silkstone since the very beginning, so I’m sure many collectors will be excited about the innovation! Will all BFMC dolls from now on be posable? Yes. What parts of the BFMC dolls will be posable? The new dolls have articulation at the knees, elbows, wrists and torso. What does it take to make the Silkstone dolls posable? A lot of hard work! I worked very closely with our brilliant internal sculptor Sean Olmos, and the two of us in turn worked closely with our development partners. There was a lot of communication and back and forth to make sure everything is perfect! How has the shift to poseability affected your design process? It hasn’t really changed my design process. I still design the way I always have. It does open up really exciting new ways in which the doll is able to showcase the fashions and clothes. The possibilities for photographing the doll also have expanded, and I’m thrilled at what we will be able to do with the photo team when we shoot the entire line. Did the change affect your thinking for the overall theme of the 2016 BFMC? I definitely see the change as positive progress. To that end, I like to think of this line as evolving just like Barbie doll has evolved through the years. It was definitely time to shake things up and give some to new excitement to this collection, so I am super pleased with the results. This thinking is why I’m calling the latest collection “The New Classics,” because while the collection is firmly rooted in classic design, there are new touches throughout. Obviously the biggest innovation is the poseability, but everything from the hair and face to the attitude has a distinctly modern, fresh approach. How are the choices of fabrics and shoes affected by this change? The fabric and shoe choices are not really affected by this change. There are new shoes across the new collection, but that’s only because everyone loves new shoes! All of the old shoes and clothes will fit the newer dolls and vice-versa, so it’s really about expanding the Silkstone world and giving more options. What do you think about the new poseability of the BFMC dolls? Share your thoughts here! Elements of this interview first appeared in the 2015 Holiday Gift Guide Catalog from The Barbie Collection. 8. Famous designers like Trina Turk work with Barbie Collector designers to make their visions a reality. Our own Bill Greening took time out to share what it was like behind the scenes with Trina Turk during the creation of the Malibu Barbie by Trina Turk Collection! Barbie Collector: You're so well known as a designer, but you're also an avid collector. Can you start by telling us when you first met the original Malibu Barbie®? Bill Greening: I met Malibu Barbie back in the 70s. I have vague memories of the Barbie aisle in the Sears toy department. When I was younger I had my own Malibu Barbie, PJ, Francie®, and Skipper® and their pool party play set. Malibu Barbie and her friends are so iconic to the Barbie brand, and so reflective of teenagers of the early 70s having fun in the surf and sand. What did you think when you heard about a new Malibu Barbie by Trina Turk project for Barbie Collector? I knew as soon as I heard about the project I was very excited to be part of it. I have been a long time fan of the Trina Turk brand. I love her style. It often reminds me of many fashions from Barbie doll's 60s and 70s wardrobe. Needless to say when I heard about the project I jumped at the chance to work on it. So, why now, and why her? Why is a new take on Malibu Barbie perfect for this moment? Malibu Barbie doll is so iconic to the history of Barbie and especially for those who played with her like myself. I think it's awesome that Malibu Barbie is such a part of pop culture history. It’s fantastic that she inspires designers, like Trina, to design a collection inspired by Malibu Barbie as well as an updated doll version. The original Malibu Barbie was a playline doll, and the new doll is anything but. How did Trina step it up to design a remarkable collectible doll? Trina and her design team were amazing to work with. They had a clear view of what they wanted from the beginning. When they came in to visit Mattel we had a fun show-and-tell session. I pulled a lot of fun dolls, fashions, and accessories from the late 60s and early 70s from the Mattel archive. The prints on some of the dolls and fashions really reminded me of the Trina Turk brand. Trina and her team brought lots of items from their line: fashions, jewelry, hats, and bags. Of course her team showed us the “Malibu Gold” print (the main print on the new doll, fashions, and packaging), and my first words when I saw it was that's soooo Barbie! How much did the original doll inspire the new doll? What does the new doll evoke of the past, and what new elements does she embody? I think this doll has many historical elements of the original, but in an updated way. First off, she’s tan - that is most iconic to Malibu Barbie, maybe not as deep a tan as the original, but hey, it’s 2013. Like the original Malibu Barbie doll, she features a slight open mouth smile and a “natural look” make-up palette. This time around her hair is a more contemporary blonde and eyes more blue-green. Naturally she’s dressed in swimwear and features an updated version of her round bubble glasses. She also borrows a fun feature from the Sun Lovin’ Malibu Barbie doll from ’78 - tan lines! Take a little peek under her bikini, LOL! Of course, it's not just the dolls that Trina designed, but the style-for-you items as well. Did you have a hand in the development process of those items, too? Trina and her team worked very closely with the Barbie Consumer Products team. The higher end items are designed by Trina Turk and some of the other designs through our Consumer Products team. My favorite is Trina’s signature cuff bracelet done in Barbie 219 pink! Tell us more about the doll, which features some really unique details. What are three of your favorite touches? I have to confess, I really love the beach bag. It's mini work of art. I love the gold vinyl trim on the top edge and handle, the miniature Trina Turk logo charm hanging from the bag. Plus, it's fully lined in the Malibu Gold print. It’s details like this that make this doll a collector product. I also love the tan lines on the doll, a feature we haven’t seen since the 1970s. Lastly, the fun and funky beach sandals based on a vintage pair from Trina's own wardrobe. Fabulous! Oh, and I love the beach hat with the daisy trim and top stitching detail on the brim. It’s hard to narrow it down! The packaging is fabulous, too! Especially for the NRFB collectors, can you talk about the development of the packaging design? The package style is what we call a window cake box. Just like the packaging we used on the My Favorite Barbie line. The best part is you can lift off the lid if you want to examine the doll more closely without disturbing the contents. It's an awesome package with the Malibu Gold print wrapping around the exterior. The inside beach scene was taken from a Malibu Barbie paper doll book from the 1970s. What was it like to work with Trina? What impressed you the most about her? I think Trina had a really cool attitude about the project and had fun with it. Trina had a clear idea of what she wanted, and a clear vision is really important when working with another designer. Of course, they were very collaborative as well, and were also open to our suggestions because we are the doll experts. I would say it was a very happy marriage. Both camps seemed equally enthusiastic about the project. Have you been in touch with her now that the project is complete? What has she said about the finished doll and lifestyle items? Last I saw Trina was at the launch party for the doll and clothing line. It was held at Nobu in Malibu, CA. Very fitting place. It was a beautiful sunny day with lunch by the beach. The entire Malibu line was on display. Trina seemed very happy with the final doll and the look of the line. I shared with her what a fun project this has been, and she couldn’t agree more. *~*~*~*~*~*~*~* The original Malibu Barbie doll is a hard to find collector’s item, but now you can get the indelibly gorgeous Malibu Barbie by Trina Turk Doll for your own collection. Get her now, before she becomes a hard-to-find treasure, too!

  15. A cool new vibe hits #TheBarbieLook™ Collection with the arrival of #TheBarbieLook™ Barbie® Doll! In her signature style, Barbie mixes the best of chic urban looks with the latest runway fashion. To reflect the most appealing fashion trends, designer Bill Greening looked at candid pictures on popular social media sites. As a result, Barbie has a realistic edge to her savvy modern flair. Greening says, “We wanted the fresh look of a young girl in a café chilling out with her journal and started with the new face sculpt created originally for the Karl Lagerfeld doll. The features are bold and pronounced — perfect for an independent spirit.” To enhance #TheBarbieLook™ Barbie® Doll's breezy appearance, Barbie has lustrous brunette hair with lots of waves to complement her big brown eyes and peach lips. “To get the right texture, the hair was braided and then unbraided so lots of labor went into the hairstyle.” While deciding on the body sculpt, Greening took inspiration from the creative Barbie photography on the @BarbieStyle Instagram account. “Many imaginative collectors love photographing their Barbie dolls and posting pictures online, so we also took that into consideration.” #TheBarbieLook™ Barbie® Doll also sports an articulated body, giving collectors a variety of poses to choose from, making Barbie a flexible, fashion-forward model perfect for the digital age. Barbie doll’s striking ensemble consists of a cozy, gray oversize sweater with a cowl collar and cocoa-brown vinyl lace-up boots over charcoal-toned leggings. Accessories include a coffee cup, cell phone, pencil, journal, sunglasses, and purse. Greening adds, “The purse is made of fabric sewn to mimic a real purse. What I like about #TheBarbieLook™ is that the dolls are always reality-based. It goes back to the original concept for Barbie — a doll in stylish fashions accessible enough to see in the real world. I can see #TheBarbieLook™ Barbie® Doll turning heads in places like cafés and college campuses.” You can also spot #TheBarbieLook™ Barbie® Doll in your real world when you get her now at our online shop!

  18. Mrs. Which, Mrs. Who, and Mrs. Whatsit are key characters in Disney’s A Wrinkle in Time, a movie filled with adventure and magic! In connection with the movie’s debut, we’re proud to introduce you to these powerful women warriors. Mrs. Whatsit is the most youthful and free-spirited warrior, who can transform into a magnificent flying creature in the film. Mrs. Which, on the other hand, is the most ancient and wise of the three celestial beings. As a guide to Meg Murry on Meg’s search across the universe for her missing father, Mrs. Which inspires Meg to become a warrior herself. And Mrs. Who could be described as quite eccentric, using her diamond spectacles to see things otherwise hidden to the eye. Barbie® Signature Senior Designer Carlyle Nuera designed all three dolls, beginning with an amazing opportunity to visit the set and see the costumes in person. “The costume designer, Paco Delgado, presented his thought process behind the different costumes for each character. The hair designer, Kim Kimble, explained how the hairstyles complemented each costume. And I got to meet Ava DuVernay! It was, for real, an incredible experience that helped me understand the look and feel for each character, an understanding I used throughout the design and development of the dolls.” From there, Carlyle worked with the Barbie® Signature team to make the dolls a reality. “To work with our master sculptor, Sean Olmos, on sculpted likenesses of Oprah Winfrey, Mindy Kaling, and Reese Witherspoon was awesome. I think he definitely captured and honored each actress beautifully. Our hair designer, Shirley Fujisaki, also captured the dynamic colors and shapes of the hairstyles in the film. And I worked with Carolina Cadena, our engineer of soft goods, to find the right fabrics and fabric treatments to recreate the film’s costumes.” Carlyle also shared details about each of the doll’s costumes exclusively with Barbie® Signature: Mrs. Whatsit's costume has a water-color like printed tricot with a cracked, iridescent foil print, touches of lace and sheer tricot, and a skirt with long pieces that flow like water on top of a blue metallic lamé. Mrs. Whatsit doesn’t wear shoes with her costume in the film, so to be true to the film, the Mrs. Whatsit doll is barefoot. Mrs. Which's costume features a puckered metallic silver lamé top with cut leaf shapes framing her face and a skirt with layers of gold-foiled black lace, metallic copper lamé, and sparkly black eyelash knit. Mrs. Who's costume feature a deep sapphire blue velvet robe, lined in gold lamé and printed with gold foil glyphs. In the film, Mrs. Who uses her glasses for wisdom to help the main characters in their journey, so we made sure to include them since they’re so important to her character. Ready to join these three warriors on an epic adventure? They’re all available in the online shop right now, and onscreen in theaters worldwide! ©Disney

Shockingly, Barbie® Signature Principal Designer Bill Greening didn’t have the original Day-to-Night™ Barbie® Doll in his personal collection, but it should come as no surprise that he’s pretty familiar with it. “I know she’s a fan favorite,” he says, “and she feels very iconic to the brand, too.” In designing her triumphant return to the workplace, Greening also benefited from an understanding of the history and the pop culture touchpoints of the women’s workplace revolution, during which Day-to-Night™ Barbie® originally debuted. “She was a business woman breaking the glass ceiling, so to speak, as showcased in films of the era like 9 to 5 and Working Girl. Plus, she’s the first doll to really showcase fashion transformation – a theme still popular today.” Features of dolls from the vintage era aren’t always the easiest to re-create, and that can present challenges for even the most seasoned designer. “The pink flocked fabric suit isn’t made from a fabric we widely use today in the Barbie line,” Greening explains, describing the soft pink power suit that transforms into a shirred skirt evening look. “We also had to make sure the fashion transformation was just as magical as the original.” How did they manage to pull that off? Well, it wouldn’t be as magical if we revealed the trick… Of course, no Barbie® doll – vintage, modern, or reproduction – is complete without a suite of fun and perfectly matched accessories. For Greening, her briefcase, calculator, spectator heels, and wide brim hat “are cues to signify she means business! I also love the Superstar face sculpt, and her bendable legs that ‘click’ when you bend them. It definitely takes me back to playing with Barbie® in the 1980s.” Considering that dolls of the Superstar era have been in demand as vintage reproductions over the last few years (including Dream Date™ Barbie® and Golden Dream™ Barbie®), giving Day-to-Night™ Barbie® the vintage reproduction treatment was a natural choice. If you missed her back in the 1980s, now’s the perfect time to add her to your collection – or give her as an inspiring gift. Get Day-to-Night™ Barbie® Doll in the online shop right now!
  21. Selma DuPar James™ Barbie® Doll has arrived on the scene, and for a limited time, the only place you can find her is at Barbie® Signature! The final doll in the Harlem Theatre™ Collection, she embodies another facet of the real-life Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s. “Selma DuPar James™ represents fine art and capturing identity and the zeitgeist through portraiture of culturally iconic figures,” says Barbie® Signature Senior Designer Carlyle Nuera. “In the Harlem Theatre™ world, that means star singer Claudette Gordon™.” And for Carlyle, that also meant including an unusual yet wholly appropriate accessory. “I love Selma’s ‘painted’ portrait of Claudette because it tells the story of who Selma is,” Carlyle notes. “The framed portrait is such a fun, unique accessory for Barbie® collectors to have and use in their dioramas.” Selma has an exceptional sense of style as well. For the debut of her latest work at the club owned by Madam Lavinia™, Selma’s chosen a mauve charmeuse mermaid-style gown with an elegant lace trim, and accessorized it with gorgeous strands of faux pearls. You might notice something else about Selma that you’ve never seen before, too. Carlyle explains: “Like Claudette Gordon™ and Madam LaVinia™, Selma DuPar James™ has a brand-new face sculpt – a beautiful, oval-shaped face with full, round lips. I definitely will be using the Selma sculpt on future Barbie® Signature dolls!” As for the Harlem Theatre™ Collection, its inspired and inspiring run has come to a close. Carlyle made sure it would end in a meaningful way. “Selma is the final doll in the series and I think she really ties the whole series together. She painted a portrait of Claudette and is debuting that portrait in Madam LaVinia’s Harlem Theatre. All three women come together in this final moment!” Barbie® Signature Platinum Status members get the first opportunity to own Selma DuParJames™ Barbie® Doll starting on 9/15, then Gold Status members starting on 9/25, and finally Pink Status members starting on 10/2.
