  1. The Barbie® Fashion Model Collection returns to its roots to celebrate Barbie doll’s high-fashion start. Inspired by the French tradition of the atelier, or artist’s workshop, the 2012 collection features exquisite design and detail from principal designer Robert Best. Blacks and whites, neutrals and pale accents speak softly and subtly, yet make a strong statement when combined with dramatic accessories. It’s time for Barbie doll’s high-fashion debut… once again. To celebrate the launch of the 2012 BFMC®, Barbie has partnered with Studio P.H. 8442 to feature the three new Silkstone® dolls (Party Dress Barbie Doll, Walking Suit Barbie Doll, and the BFC™-exclusive Afternoon Suit Barbie Doll) alongside a tightly curated selection of luxury fashion and accessories! Located on Melrose Place in West Hollywood, the studio is inspired by the glamorous dressing rituals of old Hollywood and is the perfect venue to showcase the new “atelier”-themed Barbie Fashion Model Collection. Robert Best has also art directed a Barbie-sized atelier set exclusively for the space, representing a '50s-style fashion workshop. Robert’s sketches, the prototype dolls, and corresponding photography are thoughtfully sprinkled throughout the glamorous studio. And to take the feeling of fashion whimsy one step further, one wall of the studio has been transformed into Barbie’s life-sized dream closet, filled with some of her most memorable fashion accessories. The exhibition ends on February 29th, but you can see photos from the space at PH8442.com!
  2. Coach Barbie® Doll is one of the hottest dolls of the year! She’s already sold out, and with press coverage like this, it’s no wonder. Join the 2012 Collector Advisory Panel

Mattel is now accepting applications for the 2012 Collector Advisory Panel (CAP). Since its inception in 1997, the Collector Advisory Panel has provided a special opportunity for open communication with the collecting community and our dedicated Barbie® Collector team here at Mattel headquarters. The 2012 panel will be made up of eight collectors who will regularly participate in surveys and idea sharing about Barbie® doll collecting throughout the year. Once selected, the panelists will enjoy an extra special CAP Orientation Day hosted at the Mattel headquarters in Southern California, at Mattel’s expense. The annual Cap Orientation Day is currently scheduled for Monday April 30th, 2012. In order to be considered for CAP, you must be available to attend the all day orientation on April 30th in El Segundo, factoring in travel time the day before and after the event. Click here to download your application form and instructions. And remember -- creativity counts! Your application should reflect your passion for collecting and your love of Barbie, so don’t be afraid to think outside the box when it comes to your presentation style. Please note: The Collector Advisory Panel is intended to represent hobbyists and fans only – individuals who collect and love Barbie for the pure joy of it. For this reason, dealers, storeowners, and writers for collector publications are not eligible to participate. You must be 18 years or older to apply. All completed application materials must be postmarked by Friday March 23, 2012. The selected panelists will be notified on or around Friday April 6, 2012. We look forward to hearing from you soon. Best of luck!
  4. There have been a lot of books written about Barbie®. And we've loved them all! But there's a brand-new book about Barbie that’s got our attention these days. And not just because it's written by one of our fave Barbie friends. Barbie: A Rare Beauty by Sandi Holder showcases photos of some rarely seen dolls and other Barbie items that Sandi has had the good fortune of seeing for herself through her Doll Attic shop and museum. During the past two decades, some of the rarest Barbie dolls and accessories have found their way into Sandi’s shop. She’s had the privilege of selling or auctioning one-of-a-kind items, Japanese fashions, store exclusives, and items SHE didn’t know existed until she held them in her hands. Some of the rare beauties included in the book are a rare Barbie® and Ken® Dressed Doll Assortment store display (#909) from 1963, a near-mint, incredibly rare Japanese version of the classic 1960’s Let’s Dance dress that sold at auction for $5,000, and a #6 Lemon Blond Ponytail Japanese Dressed Box Barbie® doll wearing a Resort Set (#963) fashion outfit. We recently caught up with Sandi and got the inside scoop on the book and her love for Barbie. Click the audio play button to listen in on all the doll dish! Barbie: A Rare Beauty by Sandi Holder is available in online shop beginning November 11.
  5. Do you celebrate St. Patrick’s Day (traditionally March 17th) by wearing green, like Ireland Barbie® Doll? If so, you’re not only showing spirit, you’re also showing style, because gorgeous emerald – officially, Pantone 17-5641 – is the 2013 color of the year! Described on the Pantone site as “a lively, radiant, lush green,” emerald is a rich jewel tone that packs a powerful and fashionable punch. Even if you prefer not to wear this color near your face, you can still get in on the green goodness by using it in a belt, bag, or pair of shoes! Have you ever wondered where the tradition of wearing green on St. Patrick’s Day comes from, or why people get pinched for not wearing it? One look at the verdant landscape of Ireland should answer the first question. Renowned for its rich pastures and lush rolling hills, Ireland rightfully earns the nickname “The Emerald Isle.” It’s no surprise that so many Barbie® dolls inspired by Irish culture feature various shades of green, including the rich lushness of the Deirdre of Ulster™ Barbie® Doll, the ethereal luminosity of the Faerie Queen™ Barbie® Doll, and the regal elegance of the Spellbound Lover™ Barbie® Doll. Of course, you don’t have to be Irish to wear green, and it looks particularly good on redheads! As for the pinching? That’s easy… wearing green makes you invisible to leprechauns, of course. Those mischievous sprites delight in punishing anyone they think is not showing enough Irish spirit, and a pinch from a coworker is just a friendly reminder to find something green to wear… so you don’t get pinched. (Don’t think too hard about the logic of it all; it makes about as much sense as a green bagel, green milkshake, or green beer.) It’s clear the key to being fashionably on-trend this year is as simple as adding a few emerald accessories to your wardrobe… with the added bonus of year-round protection from leprechauns. Now that’s fashion with a real purpose! Do you have a favorite Barbie® doll inspired by a particular country or culture? We’d love to hear about it! Tara Zucker's humor about collectibles, fashion, and home decor have been featured on a variety of online portals. She also creates content for clients ranging from rock bands to authors at Post Haste Media. "Growing up, I always had some off-brand fashion doll. Now that I write about the real thing, I've proved it's never too late to have a happy childhood!"
  6. Barbie® doll and PUMA unite to pay homage to the 50th anniversary of the classic Suede sneaker! From the courts to the curbs, it’s been worn by icons of every generation, and now one of the biggest icons wears them, too: Introducing the PUMA Barbie® Dolls! Go inside the Mattel Design Center with Barbie® Signature Senior Designer Carlyle Nuera to learn more about the creative influences that inspired this collaboration! The Suede hit the scene in 1968 and has been changing the game ever since. Clothing styles have changed across the decades, and fashion fads have come and gone and come back again, but the Suede sneaker has outlasted them all. The PUMA Barbie® Dolls have been specially created to celebrate the undeniable cool factor of the PUMA Suede and its 50 years of constant cultural relevance. Both PUMA Barbie® Dolls rock their very own Suede sneakers and wear '90s-inspired athleisure wear, including PUMA branded leggings, a PUMA and Barbie® branded tank top with mesh sleeves, and an oversized track jacket. Both dolls also accessorize their ensembles with aviator-style sunglasses, hoop earrings, and a PUMA logo ring. The dolls mix it up from there, each creating their own signature look. One of the dolls rolls with a white jacket over a pink top, plus black leggings and pink Suede sneakers. She wears her pink-streaked hair styled in a high ponytail with a wrap around the base. The other goes with a pink jacket over a black top, white leggings, and black Suede sneakers. Her hair is styled in a double braid, both of which are streaked with pink as well.
