  1. Welcome to the first edition of Hot Off the Barbie Press for 2012! Today, we're featuring a USA Today article that used last year's enormously popular tokidoki Barbie® doll as an example of how some Barbie dolls can also become spectacularly valuable. Why Barbie is a real doll of an investment Nancy Colasurdo, USAToday.com In October, Mattel released tokidoki Barbie, complete with a pink bob hairdo, tattoos and cactus friend, Bastardino. The dolls retailed for $50 and are, as of this writing, listed on Amazon.com starting at $400 and going for as much as $1,590. That kind of escalation in value is rare in a market where vintage or antique is typically the way to go.

  3. By Allen Voivod Getting to choose the design for a Barbie® Signature doll is a dream come true for most. And now, that dream is about to get real! We’re thrilled to announce the first-ever Barbie® Signature Doll Design Showdown. You’ll select the doll in two phases. Phase 1 consists of four design concepts. All you have to do is vote for your favorite! The poll for this phase will open on 5/29 and close on 6/12. So it’s already time to start voting! Design Concept #1: Fantastic Feathers Design Concept #2: Intergalactic Glam Design Concept #3: Women of Royalty Design Concept #4: Xtreme Fashion The two sketches that receive the most votes will move on to the next phase of the Showdown! A couple of months after Phase 1 voting ends, Phase 2 voting will begin. You’ll be presented with a prototype version of each of the top two designs, and you’ll get to vote on which one you prefer. (Why the wait between voting phases, you may ask? Because it takes time to create by hand the physical prototypes of the dolls and the fashions they wear – and we want to make sure you see the best possible version of each one when it's time to vote again!) Please note: Voting will be open to all Barbie® fans, who may vote only once per voting phase. But only Barbie® Signature Platinum and Gold Status members will be able to purchase the final doll. (Not a member yet? Learn more and join now!) Want more details? Read the sections below titled What Is the Doll Design Showdown? and How to Vote for in the Doll Design Showdown for more details, then vote today! And keep an eye on your email to see which designs move on to the prototype phase. (Make sure you're getting our emails by checking your email preferences. If you haven't signed up for our emails yet, just click here to get our email newsletter.) 2019 Barbie® Signature Showdown Voting Schedule Round: Opens: Closes: 1st Round: Design Concepts 5/29 6/12 2nd Round (Approx): Prototype Options 8/20* 9/2* *Final voting dates subject to change. What Is the Doll Design Showdown? Barbie® Signature will manufacture and offer the Doll Design Showdown winning doll, chosen from pre-selected designs and prototypes by Barbie® fans. Anyone can participate, but we will only offer this doll for sale to Barbie® Signature Platinum and Gold Status members. We will conduct two polls, each lasting two weeks, in which anyone may vote for their preference of the offered choices. You may vote only once per poll. Be sure to vote before each poll closes! (Learn more about the designer, Angel Kent.) When the final round of voting has been concluded, the winning choices will be used to manufacture the doll. Placing your votes is NOT a commitment to purchase the resulting doll, and voting in the polls is not required to purchase the resulting doll (but you must be a Barbie® Signature Platinum or Gold Status member to purchase the doll). At a later date, we will offer the winning Doll Design Showdown doll to Barbie® Signature Platinum and Gold Status members. Orders will be taken for approximately four weeks, and we will produce enough quantities to match the number of orders we receive – every Platinum and Gold Status members will have the opportunity to order and receive one. This means the item is made-to-order; made-to-order items may not reach you for approximately one (1) year after placing your order. Further details will be available when the doll is offered. Additionally, a minimum of 1,500 pre-orders are required for the winning doll to go into production. If the minimum pre-order threshold is not met, the doll will not go into production, and all pre-orders will be refunded. How to Vote in the Doll Design Showdown 1. Review the calendar above to see when voting opens and closes for the two phases. 2. Membership is not required to vote. Simply click the “Vote Now” link above to be taken to the survey. 3. Barbie Celebrates Super Sheroes!

Earlier this year, Barbie® got to take part in the Variety “Power of Women” celebration! The event honors women entrepreneurs, inventors, and innovators who change the world with their ideas and their inspiration. At the event, Barbie honored six female heroes – “Sheroes” – who embody that spirit of inspiration and innovation. One-of-a-kind dolls were created of all six honorees, which were then auctioned off in support of the Sheroes’ favorite charities. Check out the honorees and their doll likenesses, and tell us – who are the Sheroes in your own life?
  7. The 2018 Barbie® Fashion Model Collection begins with an introduction to the BFMC® Elegant Rose Cocktail Dress Doll! Featuring the posable Silkstone® doll body, this Barbie® doll makes a sophisticated statement to start the series. If you’re not familiar with the Barbie® Fashion Model Collection, you’re in for a treat. The BFMC® is the epitome of haute couture, the ultimate expression of Barbie® style for adult collectors. Previous collections in this long-running series have taken their inspirations from Italian weddings to Hollywood movie sets, and reflected fashion trends in London, Moscow, Paris, and Palm Beach. For the past few years, the focus has been on “The New Classics” – celebrating the timeless elegance of classic couture while adding a contemporary twist. Barbie® Fashion Model Collection Elegant Rose Cocktail Dress Doll embodies that aesthetic, wearing a chic two-piece outfit that features a bold red-rose pattern printed on black taffeta. A pleated cropped shell with dainty cap sleeves is layered over her strapless dress with a bubble skirt. 8. “I’m so hyped and honored to be part of the legacy of this series!” So says Barbie® Signature Senior Designer Carlyle Nuera about this year’s Holiday Barbie® Dolls, arriving with three different skin tones, facial sculpts, and hairstyles. It’s a first for Nuera, who’s designed Holiday Barbie® dolls in previous years that didn’t make it past the prototype stage. This is the first Holiday Barbie® Doll design of his to go into production. The dolls are the latest in one of the longest-running Barbie® Signature collections, and each year they present a particular challenge. “When designing this year’s doll, I thought a lot about the different reason people own a Holiday Barbie doll,” Carlyle explains. “Some parents or grandparents gift this doll to their children or grandchildren every year; it’s a tradition passed on through the generations. Some Barbie collectors look forward to this doll every year and have been collecting since the series’ debut in 1988. Some fans of the Barbie brand might not be doll collectors, but they might buy this doll just to display as part of their home’s holiday décor. So I wanted this doll to appeal to everyone.” In fact, the idea of holiday décor helped drive this year’s design. Carlyle says, “I was really inspired by traditional holiday décor, specifically Christmas tree toppers. But I also wanted this doll to feel glamourous in a modern way.” That approach translated to a unique element being added to the gown. “The golden filigree star with inset red ‘gems’ hooks onto the back of Barbie’s gown, framing her and providing bold visual impact,” Carlyle says. “I could definitely see this Barbie on top of a tree!” As for the gown itself, Carlyle says, “I designed it to be clean and modern, using red lamé fabric draped into her waist, flowing out into soft pleats, and a full skirt with a front slit that shows off her golden shoes.” As for the facial sculpts, Carlyle is a huge fan of using new and interesting faces, and the ones he chose for the Holiday Barbie® Dolls are no exception. “I used the Millie sculpt for the Caucasian, the LaVinia sculpt for the African-American and the Mermaid sculpt for the Latina. All three of them have coordinating makeup, metallic gold eyeshadow and red lips, as if they’re all walking in the same runway show.” The dolls also arrive in special holiday packaging that lets light in from all sides to reflect off the star, the ‘gems,’ and the metallic threads in the gown. Whether you’re getting them for traditions, collections, decorations, or all of these reasons, head to the Barbie® Signature online shop to get your Holiday Barbie® Dolls now. It’s never too early to start your holiday shopping!

  19. #TheBarbieLook™ Collection takes an innovative step forward with the addition of #TheBarbieLook™ Barbie® Doll! While staying true to the realism of the line, the concept for this design is based on today’s most desirable evening apparel with a touch of irresistible dazzle! According to designer Bill Greening, that meant starting with a doll that reflected #TheBarbieLook™ and gleamed with a strong inventive presence. Greening says, “We kept the theme bold and gold.” To achieve the right balance of verve and authenticity, Greening decided on the smiling Carnaval face sculpt, featuring deep-brown almond shaped eyes and lips painted a soft tangerine with a hint of gold. Gold also highlights Barbie doll’s curly brown hair, parted in the center and pulled back off her forehead, falling in ringlets around her elegant face. “The Carnaval face sculpt is very versatile with great range, and the glamorous face paint and realistic skin tone made a dynamic combination.” Fashionable realism also influenced Greening’s choice for a body sculpt. He opted for the new, curvy, articulated body used only once before, for the Madame LaVinia™ Barbie Doll. “This is the first time we’ve used this curvier body sculpt for #TheBarbieLook Collection, and — along with the style of the dress — it really takes the concept of real girls in real fashions to a new level,” Greening adds. “It was also very cool to work with the new figure for #TheBarbieLook™ Barbie® Doll.” #TheBarbieLook™ Barbie® Doll wears an aqua-gold metallic brocade dress with puffed sleeves at the shoulders. The sparkling dress is cut above the knee, and accessories include golden hoop earrings, a golden ring and a sculpted golden clutch for essentials like makeup and cell phone — everything a girl needs for that special date! Making sure #TheBarbieLook™ Barbie® Doll is fresh from head to toe, Greening even created an all-new shoe design: a caged sandal set on a stiletto heel molded in golden vinyl. “In her shimmering outfit, Barbie is a perfect model for the @BarbieStyle account on Instagram — you could call her insta-glam!” Glam up your collection with #TheBarbieLook™ Barbie® Doll available now at our online shop!

  22. One of the longest-running Barbie Signature® traditions has reached a new milestone. It's the 30th anniversary of the Holiday Barbie™ Doll! To honor this long-lasting legacy of imagination and celebration, three new Holiday Barbie™ Dolls have arrived in the online shop. The tradition began with the 1988 Happy Holidays® Barbie® Doll, and though the names of the dolls have changed over the years, a few common themes have been appeared consistently. The gowns these dolls wear are all glamorous; their jewelry suites are spectacular; and their hairstyles are endlessly elegant! For the 30th anniversary, we went back to the beginning for inspiration, updating the original red gown with off-the-shoulder cap sleeves, multi-tiered layers throughout the bodice and gown, and a delicate bow at the waist. The jewelry suite worn by our dolls includes a headband, necklace, and bracelet. If you count the "pearls" in them carefully, you'll find 30 in total – a subtle nod to the special occasion! Where the three dolls differ is in their skin tones, facial sculpts, hairstyles, and makeup. The doll with the Millie facial sculpt wears her blonde hair in cascading curls with a chic center part. The doll with the Asha facial sculpt features a trendy afro with glowing highlights that set off her deep-brown eyes. And the doll with the Tori facial sculpt uses a high ponytail with a braided accent to call attention to her hair's rich ombre effect. All three of these 30th anniversary Holiday Barbie™ Dolls are now available in the online shop, because it's never too early to shop for the holidays! They arrive in specially designed keepsake packaging and make fantastic gifts. If you have more than one Barbie® fan on your shopping list, you can get all three together in a Holiday Barbie™ Dolls Gift Set and save 10%. Make sure you get one for yourself, too. We heard that you're on the "Nice" list! Production dolls may vary from the images shown.

    Princess Grace Gala

The Princess Grace Gala was hosted by Princess Grace Foundation-USA, honoring Julie Andrews for her contribution to the arts and awarding emerging artists with scholarships to pursue their craft. The Barbie brand served as a silver sponsor and supported the Gala by donating the Grace Kelly The Bride doll and Barbie prize package to the silent auction. The Grace Kelly Bride doll was featured at the entrance of the silent auction and the prototype doll plus Design Center Tour sold for $3,000. We also had collector cards displayed at the silent auction, showcasing the complete line of Grace Kelly dolls with a special key code to purchase on BC.com. Additionally, a beautiful ad was placed in the official convention booklet showing the dolls and the complete line was also featured on-screen throughout the Gala. Finally, we were told by the Foundation that Prince Albert said the Grace Kelly doll was the most beautiful doll he has ever seen of his mother.

    The Dream Closet!

My first New York Fashion Week as a fashion designer could not have been more fabulous! From the jaw-dropping looks coming down the runway to the fab Polyvore show, this doll had a blast! But I must admit, the highlight of my trip was watching faces light up as they entered The Dream Closet at the David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center. Seeing other fashion-loving dolls enjoy the magic of The Dream Closet was the most rewarding moment of my career! The Dream Closet doors opened with an a-mazing party where my stylish guests tried on my (and Ken’s!) favorite fashions and mingled the night away. And the best part? Some of my fave designers stopped by to try on the outfits they love most! On Saturday, The Dream Closet was brought to life by young fashionistas as they spent the afternoon getting doll’d up at the Beauty Bar (thanks to the dolls at Pop and Blo), trying on fairytale looks and learning fashion designer basics from FIT’s very own Simon Collins and Parsons’ Rob Younkers! The rest of the weekend was full of equally doll-tastic surprises as New Yorkers and NYFW go-ers, including mom-to-be Kristin Cavallari, stepped behind the magical pink doors of my favorite place in the world! I hope you enjoy these pink-tastic pics from NYFW, as much as I do. Don’t forget: everyone can try on outfits from The Dream Closet by going to BarbieWow.com/TheDreamCloset! See What Happens, B.
  25. Sports, and fashion design have one thing in common, and that’s Barbie! See how in the latest edition of Hot Off the Barbie Press. 2013 University Barbie Dolls can play with Texas A&M Ken Jerry Hinnen, CBS Sports, 6/19/13 “The most interesting entry in the collection is obviously Texas A&M's, which isn't Barbie at all. It's Ken, outfitted as one of the famous Aggie ‘Yell Leaders’.” Jason Wu Had 150 Dolls, Hoarded Barbies Maureen O’Connor, New York Magazine’s “The Cut” Blog, 6/18/13 “There is a specific type of imaginative, fashion-conscious, and slightly obsessive child who hoards Barbie dolls. Designer Jason Wu was one of those children…”
