  2. By Allen Voivod Barbie® The Best Look™ Gift Set is the penultimate entry in the Barbie® Fashion Model Collection – for 2020, and for the collection itself! This is the final year for the haute couture segment from Barbie® Signature, and with this set, Senior Director of Barbie® Design Robert Best is going back to the very beginnings of Barbie® for inspiration. "I knew I wanted to include gift sets as premium offerings when we started to dream up what would eventually become the Barbie Fashion Model Collection," Robert says. "Connecting to the Barbie dolls of the past was intentional." He's also connected to the beginning of the BFMC® as well, with a two-outfit set that comes with multiple accessories, reminiscent of the very first gift set released in the series. (Learn more and hear Robert's thoughts on gift sets old and new in an exclusive for Barbie® Signature members.) The gift set features two indispensable classics: a smart suit for day wear and the perfect outfit for an evening dinner party. The stylish two-piece daytime suit includes a removable faux fur collar accented with a brooch. For the evening look, a black lace bodysuit is paired with a full tulle petticoat, trimmed with satin, under a lace skirt. Two sets of satin opera-length gloves, a tiered pearly necklace, and a satin clutch are finishing touches for either look. Stylish stiletto pumps are also interchangeable with each fashion. "I always loved the original Barbie gift sets from the '60s that featured a doll with a lot of different clothes and accessories," Robert recalls. "They seemed like the perfect experience because everything you needed to play was all right there, and it was such compelling storytelling." When you get Barbie® The Best Look™ Gift Set, you'll be able to set your own scene, thanks to the posable Silkstone® doll body and the included display stand. Barbie® Signature Platinum members will have the first opportunity to add this Gold Label® set to their collections, followed by Gold members, and then the general public. Honoring a New Role Model: Alex Morgan Barbie® Shero Doll!

By Allen Voivod Long before becoming co-captain of the U.S. women’s national soccer team, Alex Morgan demonstrated her winning attitude on and off the field. She has been honored as a Barbie® “Shero,” a woman who has broken boundaries to inspire the next generation of girls. The Alex Morgan Barbie® Shero Doll is a fitting tribute to her career and achievements! From winning FIFA Women’s World Cup championships, to being named ESPY female athlete of the year, bringing home the gold with her team and appearing on the cover of Time magazine, Alex’s ability to excite her fans stretches far beyond the field. The honor of creating a "Shero" doll to celebrate her influence and accomplishments went to Barbie® Signature Lead Designer Carlyle Nuera, who brought his own unique talents to the project. "I have to admit, I’m not a sports fan and my own athletic abilities are limited to non-existent, haha! But, when I got this project, I definitely knew who Alex Morgan was, especially in terms of her fight for equal pay for women soccer players," Carlyle reveals. "It’s of course great and exhilarating and humbling to work with someone that I'm a fan of. But regardless, it's about researching and honoring that person through how I design their Barbie." [Learn more about her design in our "behind-the-scenes article!] This collectible, fully posable Alex Morgan Barbie® Shero Doll wears a red, white, and blue soccer uniform featuring a jersey with her name printed on the back. Socks, shin guards, red cleats, and her iconic pink headband complete her winning look, and a soccer ball is included for re-creating Alex’s incredible on-field moments. We often say that girls need more role models like Alex, because imagining they can be anything is just the beginning – actually seeing that they can makes all the difference. It's a statement we all feel personally and deeply, and it comes through in the work we do. Carlyle also had some additional motivation while designing this particular doll. "It can definitely be surreal to see yourself in doll form, but my hope is that Alex herself will feel honored," Carlyle says. "Especially now that the Alex Morgan Barbie is available for others who are fans of and inspired by Alex, in particular, young girls. Alex recently gave birth to a daughter, so I also hope through this Barbie, Alex’s daughter can see how cool and inspirational her mom is." The Alex Morgan Barbie® Shero Doll is available in our online shop now. She's a Black Label® doll, retailing for $29.99 with limit two dolls per order. She makes a great gift for soccer fans and collectors – and don't forget to get one for yourself to add to your own collection!

  5. By Allen Voivod The Star Wars™ x Barbie® Collection, inspired by the films’ original concept art, re-imagines iconic Star Wars characters through a distinctive Barbie™ high-fashion filter. This year, four new dolls join our collaborative homage to the beloved space saga franchise: dolls inspired by the characters Rey™, C-3PO™, Chewbacca™, and a Stormtrooper! Just like the Darth Vader™, Princess Leia™, and R2-D2™ themed tributes that launched this collection last year (which are also available in our online shop), the four new dolls each take design inspiration from the legendary looks of the characters they represent, capturing them in runway-ready silhouettes. Each doll will arrive in special designed packaging, which includes a Certificate of Authenticity and a Star Wars™-themed doll stand for collectors who like to display their dolls out of the box. "The new series of dolls needed to maintain the same feeling as the first series, but also offer enough new details and surprises to keep fans excited about the new additions," said Robert Best, Senior Director of Barbie® Design. "For this second series, I really wanted to push the fashion elements even further. There are amazing shoe designs, great accessories and jewelry that would be at home in a runway show or a high fashion editorial photo shoot. "The clothing designs are also highly detailed with unusual textures and materials," Robert added. "One design features micro sequins and sheer organza panels, while another features faux fur and a sculpted plastic bodice. I think these will really deliver to fans of high fashion as well as fans of the Star Wars galaxy." With that in mind, let's learn more about each of the new dolls in the second series of the Star Wars™ x Barbie® Collection! Adventurous Spirit As she was drawn into a galaxy-wide conflict between the First Order and the Resistance, the mysterious power of the Force™ set Rey™ on the path to discovering her destiny in a time when the Jedi Order™ was virtually extinct. The Star Wars x Barbie® Rey Doll wears a crystal pleated chiffon gown with a crossover neckline and draped hood, inspired by Rey’s gauzy crosspiece. A slit reveals ombre boot-leggings in gold and copper hues, and accessories with a hammered gold look complete her heroic ensemble. Golden Droid Programmed for etiquette and protocol and built by the heroic Jedi™ Anakin Skywalker™, C-3PO™ was involved in some of the galaxy’s most defining moments and thrilling battles. The Star Wars x Barbie® C-3PO Doll shines in a head-to-toe liquid gold look with accents of sheer organza and golden sequins. Polished details include a golden necklace, bangles, C-3PO-inspired glasses, and a brilliant cincture echoing the droid’s primary power coupler outlet. Powerful Ally During his long life, Chewbacca™ has been many things: Wookiee™ warrior, ace smuggler, and Rebel hero. The Star Wars x Barbie® Chewbacca Doll wears a lavish faux fur coat over a strapless dress with a fur skirt and bodice of vinyl and sheer organza. Chic details include a furry headband and knee-high boots, as well as cuff bracelets and a handbag inspired by Chewbacca’s signature bandolier and satchel. Imperial Enforcer Stormtroopers’ imposing white armor, blaster rifles and great skill make them a force to be reckoned with, and their fanatic loyalty to the Empire renders them steadfast -- and lethal -- in their fight for the Imperial cause. The Star Wars x Barbie® Stormtrooper Doll is striking in head-to-toe white over a black bodysuit with a shiny patent-leather look. A platinum bob, dark glasses, cuffs, a utility belt, and boots with a knee protector plate detail complete her battle armor-inspired look. The Chewbacca™ doll is part of our Platinum Label® series of dolls, and will retail for $150. The BMR1959™ Collection Returns With Four Bold New Styles!

By Allen Voivod They were an incredible hit when they debuted last year, a series of Barbie® dolls unlike any that fans of the brand had previously seen! The BMR1959™ Collection showcases how current trends influence the brand, and for 2020, a whole new set of bold designs has arrived in the online shop! We asked Barbie® Signature Lead Designer Carlyle Nuera to tell us more about these latest additions. "Logo play is a tenet of the BMR1959 line, so in wave 2, I introduced the rainbow BMR1959 logo which uses every color in the palette," Carlyle says. "I also wanted to continue to play with fabrication. In the first wave, I used clear vinyl as a bomber jacket but in wave 2, I used vinyl again but as an inset on a windbreaker and on thigh-high boots. Color-blocking is also present in wave 2, but in a new way with mixed plaid pants." So, what else is new with this second wave? "There’s two new developments: a new Petite Made-to-Move body and a new Ken face sculpt!" Carlyle reveals. "I know Barbie collectors have been wanting a Petite Made-To-Move body for a long time, and I’m so happy to finally deliver that. Now that that body exists, we can also use it in the design of future dolls. And the new Ken face sculpt features full lips and dimples! I named him the ‘Tate’ sculpt; Tate is my middle name. There are also collector favorite sculpts in this wave: Claudette, Midge/Diva, and Tango, done in new ways." Let's take a look individually at each of the designs that celebrate Barbie® doll's fashion heritage in new, unique, and surprising ways… First up, our BMR1959™ Barbie® Doll with the petite doll body wears a boxy houndstooth blazer over a neon co-ord set with a patent leather look. Her lilac hair is styled in bantu knots accented with baby hairs, and her nails are painted to match. Chunky yellow “dad sneakers” and logo door knocker earrings finish her look. Next, our BMR1959™ Barbie® Doll with the tall doll body sports a color-block parka over her cropped tank and bike shorts. Bold details include green painted fingernails, statement eye liner, and clear vinyl thigh-high boots with a neon block heel. Chunky, '90s-inspired blonde streaks and logo hair clips frame her face. Our BMR1959™ Barbie® Doll with the original doll body wears plaid color block jogger pants, a cropped tank, and a mesh jersey top with a rainbow logo graphic. Platform combat boots, rope twist pigtails, and a red bucket hat with allover logo print finish the look. And last but not least, our BMR1959™ Ken® Doll pairs a black-and-white color-block hoodie with yellow logo tape track pants and white trainers. Bold accessories include silvery earrings, a hip bag with a rainbow logo graphic, and a translucent visor worn in his wavy red hair. All four of these collectible fashion dolls are fully articulated and come with a special BMR1959™ logo doll stand for display. The specially designed, streetwear-inspired shoebox packaging is FSC®-certified and made from materials that have been responsibly sourced. We also asked Carlyle what people thought of the first wave of dolls, and what his ambitions were for this second set. He told us, "The most rewarding feedback I received has been people feeling seen and represented by BMR1959, whether it was the skin tone of one of the dolls or the hair texture, but especially by the Ken with full face makeup! So many guys who are into makeup have reached out to me to say how appreciative they are to finally have a Ken that represents them. Some have even dressed up as that Ken or done makeup looks inspired by that Ken. I’m so touched by that! That’s the ultimate gratification for me as a designer. With the second wave of dolls, I hope people have those same kinds of emotions, of feeling seen and represented by things like the bantu knots and baby hairs, the doorknocker name earrings, the red hair and freckles." All four of the new BMR1959® dolls are now available in the online shop. Express your own style and add the whole crew to your collection today!
  8. By Allen Voivod For two decades, the Barbie® Fashion Model Collection reinterpreted classic fashions with a contemporary twist. To date, the line includes more than 140 remarkable Silkstone® dolls! In this exclusive interview, designer Robert Best talks about the end of a haute couture era with the coming launch of the 2020 BFMC®. ~*~*~*~*~ 2020 will mark the final year for the Barbie® Fashion Model Collection (for now, at least). Can you tell us why 2020 is the right time to pause its historic run? I like even numbers and it also just felt like the right time. This has truly always been a labor of love from where I sit, and I would never have it any other way. I think the collection has covered a lot of ground and after 20 years. It’s a good time to take stock, step back, and see what the future holds. What have been some of your favorite dolls in the collection? This is a tough one, there are too many favorites. I’ve always loved Delphine Barbie as she was the first glamour gown from 2000. In the Pink Barbie was fabulous for how extra it was. Marie Therese Barbie, of course – she was modelled after my sister and I love a bride. Midnight Mischief remains one of my favorite fashions. Dahlia Barbie is just a beautiful doll with amazing details. I love the entire "Career" series, and the "Hollywood" series. Preferably Pink Barbie is a stand-out for all the details and the remarkable jewelry. The Mad Men collection was an incredible partnership. The entire “Atelier” series. It's very challenging to look back at 20 years of work and narrow down to a few dolls. I truly have loved every collection. Barbie™ fans have a deep appreciation for this collection. Can you share some highlights from the feedback they’ve given you over the years? When it first launched there was palpable excitement and buzz. Collectors candidly shared that the Barbie Fashion Model Collection had reignited their love of the hobby. Others told me this was the collection that turned them on to collecting. People have always shared incredibly positive feedback and stories about their passion for Barbie, and in particular about this collection from the very beginning. So many people shared that it was their favorite collection or that it had a special place in their collection. How did you approach the creation of the 2020 BFMC® dolls? What did you do differently (if anything) this time around? And was it more emotional for you in any particular way? I approached the collection for 2020 as a bit of a return to form. I wanted all the best aspects of how I had originally conceived of the collection, with something for everyone, featuring multiple dolls with lots of great details and a range in styles while remaining classic. Every collection borrows aspects from the ones before while evolving and moving the needle in some way. I’m personally very happy with where we landed for the final year and it definitely feels as though we are ending it on a high! Of course, it's very emotional, and I am a person who typically doesn’t like change – but in this case I feel like it’s a completion and in a good way. Things change and evolve, that's a part of the natural progression of life and I’m okay with that. What can you tell us about the future of haute couture Barbie® dolls, and what’s next for you and fashion design muse? There are so many exciting things on the horizon for Barbie, new projects, new talent and new ideas. I cannot share any more specifics than to say, “Watch this space…” Barbie will always be reinventing. I'm very energized and inspired about the future. I appreciate the love and attachment collectors have shared with BFMC and me as an extension. I know for sure there will be new collections and dolls that continue to excite and engage the collector community.
  9. By Allen Voivod In a curated collaboration bridging two cultural icons, Barbie® honors renowned artist Jean-Michel Basquiat! His prolific body of work played an essential role in elevating street art from the underground to gaining well-deserved acclaim in the upper echelons of the art world. Join Barbie® in commemorating his life and work with Jean-Michel Basquiat X Barbie® Doll. "I thought of this project as a dialogue between myself, Basquiat, and Barbie, so to be in 'conversation' with two icons was way exciting!" says Barbie® Signature Lead Designer Carlyle Nuera. "Basquiat’s estate gave us digital access to images of the work in their archive. To look through every piece, and decide which ones I wanted to use based on visual appeal and meaning, was an honor." [Barbie® Signature Platinum and Gold Status members: Read more from Carlyle in our exclusive interview!] As the art movement known as neo-expressionism gained traction, a young street artist from Brooklyn, NY emerged, channeling the urban and multi-cultural influences of 1980’s New York City into an extraordinary visual language. Jean-Michel Basquiat’s captivating paintings are an infusion of graphic poetry, cultural dichotomies and compelling social statements that still inspire today. In a stunning tribute to the artist, Jean-Michel Basquiat X Barbie® Doll wears a head-to-toe ensemble featuring many well-known elements from works spanning Basquiat’s career. According to Carlyle, "Each piece of the doll’s outfit is printed with a different work of art spanning his entire career. My favorite piece is 'Big Joy,' circa 1984, printed on the suit jacket’s left arm." The elements from Basquiat's works are brought together in a bespoke suit with wide-legged trousers, a jacket, shirt, tie and belt, all emblazoned with his signature artwork in a lively color palette. Bold makeup and a golden crown finish her striking look. "The Basquiat crown is one of his most iconic motifs in his work," Carlyle notes, "so I wanted to take that 2D piece of art and make it a 3D crown on Barbie doll’s head, echoing the themes of self-worth and crowning yourself as worthy that are in his work." As with all of our Barbie® Signature dolls, Jean-Michel Basquiat X Barbie® Doll comes in specially designed packaging, with a doll stand and Certificate of Authenticity. She's a Gold Label® doll, available now for $50. For her debut, there will be a limit of two (2) dolls per person, so as many Barbie® fans as possible can add her to their collections! (But please note: This limit is subject to change at a later date.) Celebrate Jean-Michel Basquiat’s influential work with this collectible, giftable Barbie® Doll, now available in the online shop!
  10. By Allen Voivod The Barbie® Inspiring Women™ Series pays tribute to incredible heroines of their time – courageous women who took risks, changed rules and paved the way for generations of girls to dream bigger than ever before. Today, we're excited to welcome three new role models into this remarkable series! It was a chance opportunity to perform at the famous Apollo Theater that catapulted Ella Fitzgerald into stardom, to become one of the most popular and beloved jazz singers in the world. Ella would become the most recorded female in history and earned countless prestigious awards. Throughout her career, Ella lent her voice to people in need and her foundation, The Ella Fitzgerald Charitable Foundation, provides aid to children and communities by fostering a love of music and reading. Our Ella Fitzgerald Doll shines in a performance-ready look, a deep-purple gown with plenty of shimmer. In 1961, tennis pro Billie Jean King won her first major championship title, followed by a series of spectacular victories throughout her career. Off the court, she tirelessly championed women’s equality in sports. In 1973, during a globally televised match hailed as the "Battle of the Sexes," she defeated a formidable male rival and proved a woman’s place was hers to decide. Our Billie Jean King Doll wears a two-tone blue and mint-green tennis dress, inspired by what she wore during that legendary match. Florence Nightingale pursued a career in nursing, a vocation she believed was her moral duty. Enrolling as a nursing student in 1850, she made it her mission to improve hospital efficiency and standards in patient care, eventually writing books that launched reforms in medicine. In 1860, she established the Nightingale Training School, continuing to further nursing education while changing the negative attitudes towards women entering the field. Our Florence Nightingale Doll arrives in a re-creation of the nineteenth-century uniform worn by nurses tending to gravely wounded soldiers during the Crimean War. All three dolls representing these groundbreaking role models are fully articulated and come with specifically themed accessories, a doll stand, and a Certificate of Authenticity. More importantly, we need more role models like these, because imagining you can be anything is just the beginning. Actually seeing that you can makes all the difference! Click over to the online shop now to get the Barbie® Inspiring Women™ Series dolls for yourself, and get them for someone you want to inspire. Celebrate with us as we honor their extraordinary talent and lasting contributions to our lives!

    Welcome Barbie® Best To A Tea™ to the BFMC®!

By Allen Voivod It's hard to believe, but it's true: After an incredible 20 years and producing more than 100 inimitable instances of haute couture, the doors of the Barbie® Fashion Model Collection's atelier are about to close. Before they do, we'd like you to welcome Barbie® Best To A Tea™ Doll, the second of four in this final series of dolls featuring classic styles with a contemporary twist! The 2020 BFMC® kicked off with a late 2019 release of Barbie® Best in Black™ Doll (also available now in the online shop), giving collectors one last take on the "little black dress" that's an essential part of the well-dressed woman's wardrobe. In fact, this entire 20th anniversary series is designed to honor the glamour, sophistication, and timeless elegance of fashion created by Robert Best over the past two decades. In the case of styles suitable for afternoon tea, Best's first BFMC® design was for the High Tea and Savories™ Barbie® Doll Giftset in 2006, part of a British-inspired series that year. Now, Best takes the world's most recognizable fashion icon out for one more very proper social occasion with Best To A Tea™ Doll. "High Tea and Savories" was part of a whole series that was a love letter to London and all things British," says Robert Best, Senior Director of Barbie® Design. "Best to a Tea is more of a clever play on words that happens to define a beautiful classic suited doll, in the final year of this collection. It also would look incredibly chic and fitting – if you were to have afternoon tea!" As you'll see from the photos, Barbie® doll exudes elegance in a cream-colored bouclé suit ensemble, a ruffled blouse, and a chic fascinator with just the right pop of color. Sleek details include delicate black gloves, tights, and stylish booties. Her brunette hair is swept back to reveal a gorgeous vintage face sculpt and faux pearl earrings. Colorful eyeshadow and a peachy pout perfect her look. "I wanted to do a very ladylike classic suit with accessories like the fascinator so there you have it!" Best says. "The main thing was looking at all of the dolls together, and without giving away anything, I think that the full range in this final year feels like a collection that pays tribute to some of my past favorites over the 20 years I’ve designed this line." The Gold Label® Barbie® Best To A Tea™ Doll arrives in specially designed packaging that commemorates the 20th anniversary of this landmark series. It's ideal for display, but should you want to remove her from the box (and honestly, we couldn't blame you for doing it!), she also comes with a doll stand and features the posable Silkstone® doll body, for endless posing possibilities. Barbie® Signature Platinum members will have the first opportunity to pre-order her, followed by Gold members, and then the general public. (Not a member? Learn more and join here!) Since this is the final series of the Barbie® Fashion Model Collection, you won't want to miss out on your chance – get her now in the online shop!

  14. By Allen Voivod With a career spanning over five decades, David Bowie was at the vanguard of contemporary culture as a musician, artist, and icon. Now, Barbie® Signature applauds his global and multigenerational impact with the Barbie® David Bowie Doll! As a Gold Label™ doll, this will only be produced in limited quantities, and comes with a doll stand and Certificate of Authenticity. It's a definitive celebration of two pop culture icons, as Barbie® honors the pioneer of sound and vision, English singer, songwriter, and actor, whose dramatic musical transformations continue to influence and inspire. Dressed as Bowie’s fantastic sci-fi alter ego, Ziggy Stardust, Barbie® wears the iconic metallic ‘space suit’ with red and blue stripes and flared shoulders, and Bowie’s signature cherry-red platform boots. Special details include bold makeup – featuring the famed astral sphere forehead icon – and a hairstyle inspired by Bowie’s fiery-red locks. The doll will arrive (not from Mars, just from our warehouse!) in specially-designed packaging, displaying a collage of images from Bowie's early career. It's another respectful aspect of this tribute to a musical genius who redefined rock and roll. It also makes Barbie® David Bowie Doll the ultimate collector’s item for Bowie and Barbie® fans alike. Bowie was, and continues to be, a unique presence in contemporary culture. Honor his extraordinary talent and undeniable influence by adding Barbie® David Bowie Doll to your collection today! © 2019 The David Bowie Archive ® Under license to Perryscope Productions LLC/Epic Rights.

To celebrate the advent of this new streetwear-inspired series, Barbie® Signature is bringing a special event to Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles! At 3:00pm on Tuesday, October 30th, a unique BMR1959™ truck will arrive on Melrose between Ogden Drive and Orange Grove Avenue. You'll be able to get the new dolls there, and the first 100 people in line at the truck will get one BMR1959™ doll for free! But this is more than just a pop-up shopping opportunity. 17. By Allen Voivod It's the latest design for the longest-running tradition in the history of Barbie® dolls! It's also never too early to celebrate, and we're more than ready for the big reveal. In this, the global fashion icon's 60th anniversary year, we're proud to introduce the 2019 Holiday Barbie™ Dolls! This is the 31st year in the series that began as the "Happy Holidays" Barbie® Dolls. The name changed a few times over the years, but since 2004, it's been the "Holiday Barbie™ Doll," and some things have always stayed the same. The dolls are always wearing the most sophisticated ball gowns, in colors that reflect the spirit of the season. They're always glamorously styled, and they serve as both a reminder of cherished memories of the past and a symbol of joyous occasions yet to come! This year, the Holiday Barbie™ Dolls each shine in an elegant gown with red and white holiday print and silvery sparkle detail. A beautiful bow adorns each gown’s shoulder and complements a dramatic red train. Whether in curls, waves, or a ponytail, each doll's hairstyle includes a chic side part, and silvery chandelier earrings complete each doll's look. Every year, the Holiday Barbie™ Dolls also come in specially designed packaging that's perfect for gift giving, and wonderful for display if you're an NRFB kind of collector. (That's "never removed from box," in case you were wondering.) Should you take her out for display, she also comes with a doll stand, and of course a Certificate of Authenticity is tucked inside the packaging, too. There are three different Holiday Barbie™ Dolls from which to choose, but who says you have to choose! You can get all three dolls and save 10% when you buy them together in the online shop – and right now, you can’t get them anywhere else. It’s never too early to get your hands on them, so be among the first to bring home these treasured keepsakes now, and keep your holiday spirits bright all year long!
  18. By Allen Voivod It's the 80th anniversary of Marvel Comics, and Barbie® Signature is joining the celebration with a tribute to three legendary X-Men characters – Storm Barbie® Doll, Mystique Barbie® Doll, and Dark Phoenix Barbie® Doll! Designer Bill Greening led the Barbie® Signature team during this action-packed collaboration, and graciously answered our questions about the dolls and the project process in this exclusive interview. *~*~*~*~*~* What did you appreciate most about participating in this project? It’s something I've heard requested for many years from both Barbie® collectors and comic book fans, so I was really excited to take on the project. The Marvel Universe has many iconic female characters that are strong and empowering, so it was fun to bring them to “life” in the Barbie Signature line up. Marvel is celebrating its 80th anniversary in 2019 and Barbie is celebrating her 60th, so it’s an exciting time for two powerhouse brands to collaborate and celebrate together. What can you tell us about the process of selecting these three characters, and how you went about designing their looks? We had a list of about 10 female characters we suggested. The Marvel team then helped us narrow it down to 3 based on their knowledge of fan favorites. Once the characters were established, we had to narrow it down to which version of the character would be most iconic. The costumes for each have changed throughout the years. (The dolls are based on comic book looks, not the theatrical releases.) I wanted to make sure the fans of these characters felt like the Barbie® team was going to do them justice, capturing all the important details that will set these dolls apart. What would you say is your favorite detail (or details!) for each of the dolls? Storm Barbie® Doll: She's such an iconic, visually powerful female superhero. I think just the doll in its entirety is exciting to see in 3-D. Her platinum hair really stands out with her skin tone. Her cape adds a lot drama to her costume. Mystique Barbie® Doll: I mean, who doesn’t want a blue Barbie®? I love how the colors work with her look. Blue skin, bright red hair, yellow eyes. Dark Phoenix Barbie® Doll: I love her fiery red hair. It has subtle highlights that creates depth. And her eyes are glowing with power! *~*~*~*~*~* Each of the three dolls are painted to the likeness of the character, and the doll bodies feature articulation in the arms and legs to ready them for powerful poses. And now, it's time for you to exercise your own superpowers: Fly over to the online shop and add these dolls to your collection today! Storm Barbie® Doll, Mystique Barbie® Doll, and Dark Phoenix Barbie® Doll all debuted at San Diego Comic-Con and made quite the splash! If you missed the excitement, don't worry – we're coming to save the day with the dramatic video reveal. In the video embedded below, you'll get to learn more about these powerful characters, and see photos and 360-degree views of each doll. Watch it now! Video not showing up for you? © 2019 MARVEL

  21. Must love dogs? Not me! I’m an unapologetic cat person — pawsitively. Not to take anything away from proud dog owners who lavish attention on their rowdy, yappy pets, but I prefer the sleek sophistication of a cat. A regal, graceful, and mysterious creature. Yes, I’ve heard the complaints that cats are aloof and unaffectionate. To which I say, “Hiss!” My family always had cats when I was growing up. I can’t remember a time when our house was kitten-free. But then I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t sniffling and sneezing, either. Oh, cruel irony — I was diagnosed with cat allergies. Cat-astrophe! These days, I get my feline fix by bonding with friends’ cats (“The Cat Whisperer,” they call me) or watching cute cat videos online. Yes, I’m secure enough to admit that. It’s no surprise, then, that my favorite supervillain is feline fatale Catwoman and has been since the late 1960s, when I watched the campy Batman™ series on our black-and-white TV. How could I — or the Caped Crusader — ever resist this meowy mix of fur-ocious nemesis and glamour-puss seductress? Through the years, Catwoman has enjoyed more than nine lives in pop culture, clawing her way from the DC Comics pages to TV shows (live-action and animated) and eventually leaping onto the big screen in blockbuster movies. Even fiercer? The classy cat burglar is now purrfectly poised to steal collectors’ hearts as Catwoman Barbie® Doll. This elegant figure dresses for nocturnal prowling in a stylish black bodysuit with long black gloves, cat ears, and mask. Accessorized with a gold belt and matching medallion around her neck, she looks ready to charm and disarm Batman™ Ken® Doll, also available at our online store. As a cat man and Catwoman fan, I’m excited to add Catwoman Barbie® Doll to my collection — with no worries of an allergic reaction! Have a favorite version of Catwoman? Please share below! Matt Stevens is a twice-published author and sold screenwriter who specializes in movies and pop culture. A former producer for E! Entertainment Television, he now writes about film for their website, E! Online, and contributes to numerous new-media outlets. Since his first games-writing gig for Barbie.com, Matt has been tickled pink to work on BarbieGirls.com and MyScene.com before joining the BC blogger team.

  23. I am a doll. And yet, I’ve always caused a bit of a stir, starting with my debut as a teenage fashion model in a swimsuit in 1959. My creation was met with skepticism and judgment. But I was designed by a woman and mother determined to give girls a way to play, to imagine and to dream—and it was those girls who understood me and made me an instant success. Over time, I’ve become an icon, and as with all icons, I’ve been pulled into the cultural conversation. My bathing suit now hangs beside a Presidential power suit, Pastry Chef hat, and Astronaut gear in a wardrobe reflecting the more than 150 careers I’ve pursued to illustrate for girls that they can achieve anything for which they aim. And yet, I am still seen as just a pretty face. It’s simpler to keep me in a box—and since I am a doll—chances are that’s where I’ll stay. Every year, Sports Illustrated’s Swimsuit drums up conversation and controversy. Upon the launch of this year’s 50th anniversary issue, there will again be buzz and debate over the validity of the women in the magazine, questioning if posing in it is a blow to female equality and self-image. In 2014, does any woman in the issue seriously need permission to appear there? I, for one, am honored to join the legendary swimsuit models. The word “model,” like the word “Barbie®,” is often dismissed as a poseable plaything with nothing to say. And yet, those featured are women who have broken barriers, established empires, built brands, branched out into careers as varied as authors, entrepreneurs and philanthropists. They are all great examples of confident and competent women. Today, truly anything is possible for a girl. Let us place no limitations on her dreams, and that includes being girly if she likes. It’s easy to say the culprit is the color pink or the existence of makeup. That’s easy, and predictable. Neither prevents girls from excelling in their own fashion. Let her grow up not judged by how she dresses, even if it’s in heels; not dismissed for how she looks, even if she’s pretty. Pink isn’t the problem. “Barbie® dolls” aren’t the problem. Models choosing to pose in a bikini aren’t the problem. The assumption that women of any age should only be part of who they are in order to succeed is the problem. So the Swimsuit issue is out, and there’s bound to be a conversation or two about the women in it. Ask yourself, isn’t it time we teach girls to celebrate who they are? Isn’t there room for capable and captivating? It’s time to stop boxing in potential. Be free to launch a career in a swimsuit, lead a company while gorgeous, or wear pink to an interview at MIT. The reality of today is that girls can go anywhere and be anything. They should celebrate who they are and never have to apologize for it.
