Whenever the spirit of the Olympics draws athletes and the world together in solidarity, it's an incredible event. Back in 1975, Barbie® celebrated the excitement of competition and the enduring power of teamwork with the first Gold Medal™ Barbie® Doll. Now, Barbie® Signature honors these epic spectacles, which put the ultimate sporting achievements on display, with the return of Gold Medal Barbie™ as a vintage reproduction!
When discussing importance of the original Gold Medal™ Barbie® Doll, designer Bill Greening notes, "This was the first time we see Barbie as an gold medal athlete. I think this doll really stands up to our brand mantra, to inspire the limitless potential in every girl."
Like the original doll, our vintage reproduction is dressed in red, white, and blue, and proudly sports an Olympics-inspired "gold" medal around her neck. The Malibu Barbie® influence on 1970s Barbie® doll designs is evident here, with Barbie® sporting sun-kissed blonde hair and bright blue eyes, plus a smile you could easily describe as "winning" – both figuratively and literally in this case!
In fact, a certain of aspect of that "Malibu" look proved to be the most challenging part of this vintage reproduction. What was it? "Getting that Malibu tan skin tone correct!" Bill says with a laugh. But of course, the process of creating the doll has elements of pure joy, too. "It’s always fun to work on a reproduction with a Twist 'n Turn waist and bendable legs," Bill says. "That click-click of the legs really takes me back."
The 1975 Gold Medal Barbie™ vintage reproduction arrives with a doll stand and a Certificate of Authenticity, in specially designed packaging. "I really like the new package design," Bill adds. "The original doll was sold in a closed box. This new version features the original 1970s artwork but in a window box. She looks very nice in package if you decide to keep her NRFB." (That's "never removed from box," if you're not familiar with the acronym.)
This Black Label® doll will retail for $24.99 in the online shop. When she debuts, there will be a limit of two (2) dolls per person, so as many Barbie® fans as possible can add her to their collections. (This limit is subject to change at a later date.)
The best news is, you won't have to jump over hurdles or ski down mountains to get this Gold Medal Barbie™ Doll. All you have to do is go to the online shop and get her before the closing ceremonies – that is, before she sells out!
