2019 Barbie® Signature Doll Design Showdown: Vote for a Winning Prototype!

By Allen Voivod

Your voices have been heard! Two doll designs have made it to the prototype phase of the first-ever Barbie® Signature Doll Design Showdown. Which design will become a members-only exclusive doll? It's all up to you!

Here's a quick recap of the action so far. Phase 1 of the Showdown consisted of four design concepts. Thousands of Barbie® fans voted earlier this year, and selected two designs to move on to Phase 2. Today, we're revealing for the first time how those designs have been translated into physical dolls for your consideration!

Design Concept: The Royal Court

The Royal Court showcases fashion inspired by royals with a distinctly modern twist.

Design Concept: Flight of Fashion™

Flight of Fashion™ features a fantastical feathered look inspired by winged creatures both real and imagined.

Now, all you have to do is vote for your favorite! The polls are open, and your vote is more important than ever before. The prototype that receives the most votes in this round will win the Showdown, and go into further design for manufacturing and get ready to be made available for pre-ordering!

Please note: Voting will be open to all Barbie® fans, who may vote only once per voting phase. But only Barbie® Signature Platinum and Gold Status members will be able to purchase the final doll. (Not a member yet? Learn more and join now!)

2019 Barbie® Signature Doll Design Showdown Voting Schedule

Round: Opens: Closes:
1st Round: Design Concepts DONE DONE
2nd Round : Prototype Options 10/8* 10/21*

*Final voting dates subject to change.

What Is the Doll Design Showdown?

Barbie® Signature will manufacture and offer the Doll Design Showdown winning doll, chosen from pre-selected designs and prototypes by Barbie® fans. Anyone can participate, but we will only offer this doll for sale to Barbie® Signature Platinum and Gold Status members.

We will conduct two polls, each lasting two weeks, in which anyone may vote for their preference of the offered choices. You may vote only once per poll. Be sure to vote before each poll closes! (Learn more about the designer, Angel Kent.)

When the final round of voting has been concluded, the winning choices will be used to manufacture the doll. Placing your votes is NOT a commitment to purchase the resulting doll, and voting in the polls is not required to purchase the resulting doll (but you must be a Barbie® Signature Platinum or Gold Status member to purchase the doll).

In the early spring of 2020, we will offer the winning Doll Design Showdown doll to Barbie® Signature Platinum and Gold Status members. (By then, we’ll have actual product sample images for you, so you’ll see the final doll that you’ll be ordering. Orders will be taken for approximately four weeks, and we will produce enough quantities to match the number of orders we receive – every Platinum and Gold Status members will have the opportunity to order and receive one. This means the item is made-to-order; made-to-order items may not reach you for approximately one (1) year after placing your order. Further details will be available when the doll is offered.

Additionally, a minimum of 1,500 pre-orders are required for the winning doll to go into production. If the minimum pre-order threshold is not met, the doll will not go into production, and all pre-orders will be refunded.

How to Vote in the Doll Design Showdown

The "Flight of Fashion" prototype reminds me a bit of the fae (fairys) in the Amazon Original series "Carnival Row". If these dolls are intended for adult collectors, that would certainly be fine. I do love the gown on the "Royal Court" prototype, though (the back train hearkens back to 18th-century gowns), and that doll would be a more traditional princess/evening gown look that I could see sharing with granddaughters some day, so I cast my vote for "Royal Court."

I think "Royal Court's" neck choker needs more embellishment, but she is my fav.

Sadly I am disappointed in both dolls. The gowns and make-up seem overly simplified and child like. Better luck next time!
